Sunni Tradition: Observed on the 12th day of the month.

Shia Tradition: Observed on the 17th day of the month.

Gregorian Shift: Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, the holiday moves about 10 days earlier each year on the standard calendar. 

Translation: "Mawlid al-Nabi" means "the birth of the Prophet" in Arabic. 

Purpose: Muslims use the day to show love for the Prophet, reflect on his teachings, and thank G-d for his life and legacy
